I have the honor of taking over the chairmanship of the Altar Guild from Mary Reuning, who dedicated 15 years to this endeavor among many other activities.
I was patiently trained by Mary and hope we continue with the same service and spiritual commitment that she has shown. We are blessed to have Mary in our midst.
Presently the happy group that makes up First Lutheran’s Altar Guild includes myself and my husband Bill Yantis, Ben Rivera and a new recruit, Anya Burkart. We fill in for each other when our scheduled Sunday(s) conflict with other commitments. And thank goodness for the Elders who set up the Altar when none of us are available. There is always someone to step in when there is a need.
Our role is to make sure that our place of worship is maintained and set up for the times and seasons of the Church Year. We set up the Altar, put things away, clean and polish, and order supplies. Everything we do is to aid the communication of the Gospel. The traditions and continuity involved in the Altar Guild are important as long as they are in harmony with strengthening our faith and glorify our Lord. We hope our work always reflects this goal.
Before I joined the Altar Guild I never knew the names of many of the vessels used during Holy Communion. For example, how many of you know what the following are: piscina, predella, pyx, lavabo, or chalice pall! One way to find out is to join the Altar Guild. One Sunday a month or 3 times a year, or whatever you can commit to, we can make it work together.
Please think about this special way to serve our Lord and First Lutheran.
Susan Yantis – Altar Guild Chair
God’s blessings as you follow His calling to tend to Altar Guild, Susan, Bill, Ben, and Anya. Serve the Lord with gladness.
