Lutheran Essentials meets in the undercroft of the church on Wednesday evenings at 7pm. You can reach the undercroft by going around to the back parking lot of the church and descending the staircase to the kitchen. Knock on the door if it is closed and some one will let you in. You can also join us remotely via our livestream. Our current study is on “Ceremony and Celebration” by Paul H. D. Lang. We are handing out copies of the book for free as well as copies of the Book of Concord and the Lutheran Service Book.
We will open class with Psalm 120 and our catechism lesson will be on Confession. We will then start our study of Ceremony and Celebration by reading the Preface. We will talk about the motivating questions for this book and study. We will also look at the theme verses for the book that focus on how we are to rightly glorify and worship God. We will then sing the hymn “Shepherd of Tender Youth” (LSB 864)
We will then read Chapter I: Definition of Liturgy (pg. 1-5). We will discuss what we mean by the liturgy. We will talk about the liturgy in the Church’s Worship. How the liturgy is not just words but actions. That the liturgy is Christ’s and not for entertainment. We will also discuss that the entire congregation are liturgists for all participate in the liturgy. We will close with the hymn “Lord Jesus Christ, the Church’s Head” (LSB 647)
As always new people are always welcome to this study at any point during the class. Please talk to the Pastor, Elders or Paul Edmon if you have any questions.
