Martin Luther Preaching, Lucas Cranach the Elder (1547)

Lutheran Essentials meets in the undercroft of the church on Wednesdays at 7pm.  You can reach the undercroft by going around to the back parking lot of the church and descending the staircase to the kitchen.  Knock on the door if it is closed and some one will let you in.  You can also join us remotely via our livestream.  We are starting our study of Martin Luther’s Large Catechism.   As part of the class we are handing out copies of the Book of Concord (which contains the Catechism) and the Lutheran Service Book for free.

We will open our study with Psalm 1.  We will then read the Long Preface of the Large Catechism.  We will discuss how we should always be studying the catechism and never be so haughty as to think that we have it all understood.  Instead we are to be as little children with the Word of God, constantly learning and rejoicing in even the most basic doctrines.  We will finish this section with the hymn “Lord Keep Us Steadfast in Thy Word” (LSB 655).

We will then pray Psalm 119:1-8 (Aleph) and then read the Short Preface.  In this preface Luther talks especially to fathers, as head of the household, to teach the faith to their children.  The careful and constant instruction of children is critical to them maturing in the faith and love of God.  We will then finish with the hymn “Shepherd of Tender Youth” (LSB 864).

As always new people are always welcome to this study at any point during the class.  Please talk to the Pastor, Elders or Paul Edmon if you have any questions.
