Lutheran Essentials meets in the undercroft of the church on Wednesday evenings at 7pm. You can reach the undercroft by going around to the back parking lot of the church and descending the staircase to the kitchen. Knock on the door if it is closed and some one will let you in. Our current study is on the Canon of Scripture. The book we are using is F. F. Bruce’s “The Canon of Scripture”. If you do not have a copy we are providing them for free. We are also continuing to provide the Book of Concord for free.
The Psalm for this session is Psalm 16. The Small Catechism lesson is the Ninth Commandment.
This week we be wrapping up our study on the canon with the twenty third chapter Conclusion: Canon, Criticism, and Interpretation. We will read the section on Canonical Criticism (pg. 284-287) and discuss which version of the texts are canonical. We will then read the section ‘As Originally Given’ (pg. 287-288) and discuss what it means to use the original autograph. We will then read the section on Stages of Composition (pg. 289-290) and discuss the discredited “Q” theory. We will read the sections Variety in Unity (pg. 290-291), Canonical Exegesis (pg. 294), and ‘All Scripture’ (pg. 294-297) and discuss proper biblical exegesis. We will finish this chapter by singing the hymn “Lord Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word” (LSB 655).
Next week, October 29th, will be our last week of this study. It will be an open question session. Please bring any remaining questions you have about Holy Scripture to this session. We will be starting a new study on “The Spirituality of the Cross” by Gene Edward Veith Jr. on November 5th.
As always new people are always welcome to this study at any point during the class. Please talk to the Pastor, Elders or Paul Edmon if you have any questions.
