Lutheran Essentials meets in the undercroft of the church on Wednesday evenings at 7pm. You can reach the undercroft by going around to the back parking lot of the church and descending the staircase to the kitchen. Knock on the door if it is closed and some one will let you in. You can also join us remotely via our livestream. Our current study is on the Treatise on the Power and Primacy of the Pope. We are providing hard copies of the Book of Concord for free, as well as copies of the Lutheran Service Book.
We will open class with Psalm 117 and our catechism lesson will be on the Third Part on Holy Baptism. We will begin reading the Introduction to the Treatise which lays out the claims of the pope. We will then move on to talk about the Testimony of Scripture which refutes these claims, namely that the pope is the head of the church by divine right and that one must believe this to be saved. We will also look at the Testimony of History which shows that the pope was not the head of the church in the Early Church but was one of five Patriarchs. We will then refute how the pope abuses Scripture to justify his claims. If we have time we will go into a contrast between Christ and the pope.
We will conclude our study of the Treatise the following week with us beginning a new study on “Ceremony and Celebration” on October 31st. As always new people are always welcome to this study at any point during the class. Please talk to the Pastor, Elders or Paul Edmon if you have any questions.
