Lutheran Essentials meets in the undercroft of the church on Wednesday evenings at 7pm.  You can reach the undercroft by going around to the back parking lot of the church and descending the staircase to the kitchen.  Knock on the door if it is closed and some one will let you in.  Our current study is Martin Luther’s Large Catechism. If you do not have a hard copy of the Book of Concord we are providing it for free, as well as copies of the Lutheran Service Book.

We will begin our study with Psalm 119:145-152 (Qoph) and introduce the Ten Commandments.  We will talk about Law and Gospel and how we are to properly use God’s Law as a curb, mirror, and guide.  We will close by singing the hymn “Salvation Unto Us Has Come” (LSB 555).

We will then read Psalm 115, the First Commandment from the Small Catechism, sing verses 1, 2, 11-12 of “These are the Holy Ten Commands” (LSB 581), and then study the First Commandment in the Large Catechism.  We will discuss what it means to have a God.  We will also discuss what God demands of us as God, namely our fear, love, and trust.  We will also discuss idolatry, false religions, and syncretism.  We will close by reading the First Commandment from the Small Catechism, singing verses 1, 2, 11-12 of “These are the Holy Ten Commands” (LSB 581), and singing “Sing Praise to God the Highest Good” (LSB 819).

As always new people are always welcome to this study at any point during the class.  Please talk to the Pastor, Elders or Paul Edmon if you have any questions.
