Lutheran Essentials meets in the undercroft of the church on Wednesday evenings at 7pm. You can reach the undercroft by going around to the back parking lot of the church and descending the staircase to the kitchen. Knock on the door if it is closed and some one will let you in. We are beginning our study of Martin Luther’s Large Catechism. If you do not have a hard copy of the Book of Concord we are providing it for free, as well as copies of the Lutheran Service Book.
We will begin our study with Psalm 1. We will then read Luther’s Introduction to the Large Catechism. We will discuss why the catechism is so important and why we need to teach it to both children and adults. We will finish this section by singing “Lord Keep Us Steadfast in Thy Word” (LSB 655).
Next we will read Psalm 119:1-8 (Aleph) and take up Luther’s Short Preface. We will discuss what the catechism is, how fathers should teach the catechism, and what is expected of people before they come to the Sacrament of the Altar. We will finish this section by singing “Shepherd of Tender Youth” (LSB 864).
We will then read Psalm 119:145-152 (Qoph) and introduce the Ten Commandments. We will talk about Law and Gospel and how we are to properly use God’s Law as a curb, mirror, and guide. We will close by singing the hymn “Salvation Unto Us Has Come” (LSB 555)
As always new people are always welcome to this study at any point during the class. Please talk to the Pastor, Elders or Paul Edmon if you have any questions.
