Lutheran Essentials meets in the undercroft of the church on Wednesday evenings at 7pm. You can reach the undercroft by going around to the back parking lot of the church and descending the staircase to the kitchen. Knock on the door if it is closed and some one will let you in. You can also join us remotely via our livestream. Our current study is on the Didache. We will using “The Apostolic Fathers in English Third Edition” by Michael W. Holmes as our text, which we are providing free of charge. We are also providing hard copies of the Book of Concord for free, as well as copies of the Lutheran Service Book.
We will open class with Psalm 100 and our catechism lesson will be on the Ninth Commandment. We will start with reading Didache 3-4. We discuss the things we are to do and things we are not to do. We will talk about praying for pastors, giving to beggars, raising our children in the faith, and how we are not to be hypocrites. We will also discuss how we are not to lose heart in keeping the Law even when we see the wicked prosper. We will close with singing “If Thou But Suffer God to Guide Thee” (LSB 750).
We will then read Didache 5. We will talk about the Way of Death, that is the way of the world. We will talk about the evils that we are to avoid as those who tread on the Way of Life; that being debauchery, licentiousness, malice, covetousness, idolatry, etc. We have been sundered from this Way of Death by Christ’s atonement and now must have nothing to do with it. We will close with singing the hymn “Who Trusts in God a Strong Abode” (LSB 714)
As always new people are always welcome to this study at any point during the class. Please talk to the Pastor, Elders or Paul Edmon if you have any questions.
