Lutheran Essentials meets in the undercroft of the church on Wednesday evenings following the Lenten Prayer and Preaching Service which starts at 7pm. You can reach the undercroft by going around to the back parking lot of the church and descending the staircase to the kitchen. Knock on the door if it is closed and some one will let you in. Our current study is on the Epitome of the Formula of Concord. If you do not have a copy of the Book of Concord we are providing them for free.
We have no Psalm for this week as we have the Lenten service beforehand. The Small Catechism lesson is the Tenth Commandment.
This week we will be starting our new study on the Epitome of the Formula of Concord with the Editor’s Introduction in the 2nd Edition of the Reader’s Book of Concord (pg. 433-458). We will briefly cover the history spanning where we left off with the Smalcald Articles in 1537, through Martin Luther’s death in 1546, all the way to the production of the Book of Concord in 1580. We will close out this section by singing “Lord Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word” (LSB 655)
If we have time we will also read through the section about Controversies and the Formula of Concord in the Reader’s Edition of the Book of Concord (pg. 461-471). We will briefly discuss the various controversies that are addressed in the Formula of Concord and who were the sources of those controversies. We will close by singing the hymn “A Mighty Fortress is Our God” (LSB 656).
As always new people are always welcome to this study at any point during the class. Please talk to the Pastor, Elders or Paul Edmon if you have any questions.
