Lutheran Essentials meets in the undercroft of the church on Wednesday evenings at 7pm. You can reach the undercroft by going around to the back parking lot of the church and descending the staircase to the kitchen. Knock on the door if it is closed and some one will let you in. Our current study is on the Canon of Scripture. The book we are using is F. F. Bruce’s “The Canon of Scripture”. If you do not have a copy we are providing them for free. We are also continuing to provide the Book of Concord for free.
The Psalm for this session is Psalm 119:169-176 (Taw). The Small Catechism lesson is the Seventh Petition of the Lord’s Prayer.
This week we will finish reading through the first chapter Introduction: Holy Scripture. We will read the section on A Closed Canon (pg. 22-23) and discuss what it means to have a closed canon. Finally we will read Liturgical Recognition (pg. 23-24) and discuss our recognition of God’s Word in the liturgy. We will finish this chapter by singing the hymn “I Know My Faith Is Founded” (LSB 587).
We will move on to start on The Old Testament: The Law and the Prophets. We will read the section on Jesus’ Appeal to the Hebrew Scriptures (pg. 27-28), discuss who Christ is, and how He used the Scriptures. The person of Christ will become the lynchpin for the rest of the study as the basis of what Scripture is rests on who we think Jesus of Nazareth is.
As always new people are always welcome to this study at any point during the class. Please talk to the Pastor, Elders or Paul Edmon if you have any questions. Have a blessed 7th week of Easter.
