Lutheran Essentials meets in the undercroft of the church on Wednesday evenings at 7pm. You can reach the undercroft by going around to the back parking lot of the church and descending the staircase to the kitchen. Knock on the door if it is closed and some one will let you in. We are finishing up our study of the The Smalcald Articles in the Book of Concord. If you do not have a copy of the Book of Concord we are providing them for free.
The Psalm for this week is Psalm 36. The Small Catechism lesson is the Eighth Commandment.
This week we will read Part III Article XII: The Church. As Luther does we will follow the wisdom of a little child for the definition of church. We will sing “Built on the Rock” (LSB 645)
We will then read Part III Article XIII: How One Is Justified before God and Does Good Works. We will discuss the relationship between Justification and Sanctification. We will sing “Dear Christians, One and All, Rejoice” (LSB 556).
Next we will read Part III Article XIV: Monastic Vows. We will discuss how monastic vows were abused and that vows merit nothing before God. We will sing the hymn “I Bind Unto Myself Today” (LSB 604).
Finally we will read Part III Article XV: Human Traditions. We will discuss the proper role of tradition in the church and wrap up our study of the Smalcald Articles by reading the names of those who subscribe to these Articles. We will conclude by singing “One Thing’s Needful” (LSB 536).
Next week we will start our next study on the Treatise on the Power and Primacy of the Pope.
As always new people are always welcome to this study at any point during the class. Please talk to the Pastor, Elders or Paul Edmon if you have any questions.
