The Return of the Prodigal Son, Pompeo Batoni (1773)
Lutheran Essentials meets in the undercroft of the church on Wednesdays at 7pm. You can find the undercroft by going around the back to the parking lot of the church and then down the stairs through the kitchen. Please knock on the door and ring the bell and some one will let you in. You can also join us remotely via our livestream on the FLC YouTube. We are studying the Augsburg Confession. As usual we are handing out copies of the Book of Concord and the Lutheran Service Book for free.
Our Psalm for the evening will be Psalm 119:57-64 (Heth) and our Catechism lesson will be on the Second Petition of the Lord’s Prayer. We will consider Article XIII of the Augsburg Confession on the Use of the Sacraments. We discuss what the Sacraments are for, namely as a visible token, sign, and instrument for the Lord’s forgiveness. We will also discuss how many Sacraments there are. We will then sing the hymn “My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less” (LSB 575).
Next we will cover Article XIV on Order in the Church. We discuss how only men who are called should preach, teach, and administer the Sacraments in the Church. We will also talk about what it means to be rightly called. We will close with the hymn “Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord” (LSB 497).
As always new people are always welcome to this study at any point during the class. Please talk to the Pastor, Elders or Paul Edmon if you have any questions.
