Lutheran Essentials meets in the undercroft of the church on Wednesday evenings at 7pm. You can reach the undercroft by going around to the back parking lot of the church and descending the staircase to the kitchen. Knock on the door if it is closed and some one will let you in. Our current study is on the Epitome of the Formula of Concord. If you do not have a copy of the Book of Concord or the Lutheran Service Book we are providing them for free.
This week’s psalm is Psalm 69. The Small Catechism lesson is the Sixth Petition of the Lord’s Prayer.
Spring boarding from Article VII last week we will be studying Article VIII: The Person of Christ. We will discuss the personal union of man and God in Christ, and how Sacramentarian theology destroys this union. We will discuss the heresy of Nestorius as well as talk about how the Virgin Mary, though only a sinful woman, is still rightfully called theotokos (“God bearer”) and the mother of God. We will close this article with singing the great St. Ambrose hymn “Savior of the Nations Come” (LSB 332).
If we have time we will also study the very brief Article IX: The Descent of Christ to Hell. We will talk about how the descent into hell is not part of Christ’s suffering and what Christ does when He goes to hell after the crucifixion but before His resurrection. We will close with singing the hymn “Christ is the World’s Redeemer” (LSB 539).
As always new people are always welcome to this study at any point during the class. Please talk to the Pastor, Elders or Paul Edmon if you have any questions.
