St. James the Greater, Jan Verhoeven (1615-1676)
Lutheran Essentials meets in the undercroft of the church on Wednesdays at 7pm. You can find the undercroft by going around the back to the parking lot of the church and then down the stairs through the kitchen. Please knock on the door and ring the bell and some one will let you in. You can also join us remotely via our livestream on the FLC YouTube. We are studying the Augsburg Confession. As usual we are handing out copies of the Book of Concord and the Lutheran Service Book for free.
Our Psalm for the evening will be Psalm 119:97-104 (Mem) and our Catechism lesson will be on the Seventh Petition of the Lord’s Prayer. We will consider Article XXIII of the Augsburg Confession on the Marriage of Priests. We will discuss the various abuses wrought by the enforced celibacy of the Roman clergy. Clergy are to be free to marry a wife if they desire in accordance with the Lord’s will for mankind to be in families. We will sing the hymn “The Church’s One Foundation” (LSB 644).
Next we will cover Article XXIV on the Mass. We will discuss the many and various abuses in the Roman Catholic Mass. We will then discuss what the true purpose of the Divine Service is, which is for God to give us His gifts and not for us to earn merit with God. We will close with the hymn “Lord Jesus Christ, You Have Prepared” (LSB 622).
As always new people are always welcome to this study at any point during the class. Please talk to the Pastor, Elders or Paul Edmon if you have any questions.
