Lutheran Essentials meets in the undercroft of the church on Wednesday evenings at 7pm.  You can reach the undercroft by going around to the back parking lot of the church and descending the staircase to the kitchen.  Knock on the door if it is closed and some one will let you in.  Our current study is on “In Christ All Things Hold Together”.  If you do not have a hard copy of the book we are providing it for free, as well as copies of the Book of Concord and the Lutheran Service Book.

This week’s psalm is Psalm 74.  The Small Catechism lesson is the Fourth Part on Holy Baptism.

We will be reading Chapter 1: Theological Foundations (pg. 16-51).  In the Introduction (pg. 16-17) we will define epistemology and why we need to understand how we know what we know.  We will then study the authority of Scripture and the proper role of reason (pg. 17-20).  We will also look at the proper relationship between God’s “two books” (pg. 20-25).  Then we will discuss the doctrine of vocation (pg. 25-28) followed by an investigation of the relationship between Christianity and culture (pg. 28-35).  We will then talk about a Christocentric approach to creation (pg. 35-46) as well as what it means that humans have the image of God (pg. 43-47).  Finally we will discuss the theological underpinings of modern science (pg. 48-51).  We will close out this chapter by singing “Praise the Almighty” (LSB 797).

As always new people are always welcome to this study at any point during the class.  Please talk to the Pastor, Elders or Paul Edmon if you have any questions.
