Moses with the Ten Commandments, Philippe de Champaigne (1648)
Lutheran Essentials meets in the undercroft of the church on Wednesdays at 7pm. You can find the undercroft by going around the back to the parking lot of the church and then down the stairs through the kitchen. Please knock on the door and ring the bell and some one will let you in. You can also join us remotely via our livestream on the FLC YouTube. We are studying the Augsburg Confession. As usual we are handing out copies of the Book of Concord and the Lutheran Service Book for free.
Our Psalm for the evening will be Psalm 119:81-88 (Kaph) and our Catechism lesson will be on the Fifth Petition of the Lord’s Prayer. We will consider Article XIX of the Augsburg Confession on the Cause of Sin. We will discuss that God is not the cause of sin, though He does use the results of sin for His own ends. Satan and man himself are the cause of sin and their own damnation. We will sing the hymn “O Sacred Head, Now Wounded” (LSB 450).
Next we will cover Article XX on Good Works. We will cover that in fact Lutherans do preach and teach about good works. Good works are those works that flow from true faith and done in accord with God’s Law, which is God’s good and perfect will for humanity. These works do not merit salvation, but instead show our love toward God and our neighbor. We will close with the hymn “Renew Me, O Eternal Light” (LSB 704).
As always new people are always welcome to this study at any point during the class. Please talk to the Pastor, Elders or Paul Edmon if you have any questions.
