Lutheran Essentials meets in the undercroft of the church on Wednesday evenings at 7pm. Currently we are studying the Augsburg Confession using the 2nd Edition of the Readers Edition of the Book of Concord. If you do not have a copy we are providing them for free.
The Psalm for this session is Psalm 119:49-56 (Zayin). The Small Catechism lesson is the 7th Commandment. Last week we covered the articles on Baptism (IX) and the Lord’s Supper (X).
This week we will be covering Confession (XI). We will discuss what Private and Public Confession, Absolution, what sins need to be confessed and how many. Since the Confutation disagrees with this article we will also read the Apology of the Augsburg Confession XI. The hymn for this article is “From Depths of Woe I Cry to Thee” (LSB 607) which is Martin Luther’s catechetical hymn on Confession.
Next we will cover Repentance (XII). We will discuss the two parts of Repentance, who is to be absolved, whether you can lose your faith, whether you can obtain a state of perfection in this life and penance. The Confutation disagrees with this article as well so we will read from the Apology XIIa (V) 1-3 and XIIb (V) 16-24. The hymn for this article is “When in the Hour of Deepest Need” (LSB 615).
Given the importance of these two topics it is unlikely that we will make it to Article XIII and XIV on the Use of the Sacraments and Order in the Church.
As always new people are always welcome to this study at any point during the class. Please talk to the Pastor, Elders or Paul Edmon if you have any questions. Have a blessed 3rd week of Epiphany.
