Lutheran Essentials meets in the undercroft of the church on Wednesday evenings at 7pm. You can reach the undercroft by going around to the back parking lot of the church and descending the staircase to the kitchen. Knock on the door if it is closed and some one will let you in. Our current study is Martin Luther’s Large Catechism. If you do not have a hard copy of the Book of Concord we are providing it for free, as well as copies of the Lutheran Service Book.
We will recite Psalm 139, read the Fifth Commandment from the Small Catechism, and singing verses 1, 6, 11-12 of “These are the Holy Ten Commands” (LSB 581). We will then read the Fifth Commandment in the Large Catechism. We will discuss what it means for the government to bear the sword and whether it is sinful for Christians to be soldiers. We will then discuss what it means to murder and how the Fifth Commandment forbids hatred and anger against our neighbors but rather calls us to aid and help our neighbor. We will also talk about other life issues such as birth control, abortion, euthanasia, and suicide. We will close with the hymn “Lord of All Nations, Grant Me Grace” (LSB 844).
As always new people are always welcome to this study at any point during the class. Please talk to the Pastor, Elders or Paul Edmon if you have any questions.
