Creation by Lucas Cranach the Elder (1530)

Lutheran Essentials meets in the undercroft of the church on Wednesdays at 7pm.  You can reach the undercroft by going around to the back parking lot of the church and descending the staircase to the kitchen.  Knock on the door if it is closed and some one will let you in.  You can also join us remotely via our livestream.  We are studying Martin Luther’s Large Catechism.   As part of the class we are handing out copies of the Book of Concord (which contains the Catechism) and the Lutheran Service Book for free.

We will open our study with Psalm 14, and study the Introduction to the Apostles’ Creed in the Large Catechism.  We will discuss why we have creeds, and where the three Ecumenical Creeds come from historically.  We will then overview the three sections of the Apostles’ Creed.  We will the sing the hymn the Te Deum (LSB 223).

We will then read Psalm 33, recite the First Article of the Creed from the Small Catechism, and sing verse 1 of the hymn “We All Believe in One True God” (LSB 954).  We will then look at the First Article in the Large Catechism.  We will talk about how there is only One God, and the first person of the Trinity.  We will then discuss God the Father as creator and sustainer of all things, who guards and protects us from all evil.   We will also talk about the reality of 6 Day Creation and the science of evolution and Big Bang Theory.  We will point out how Scripture and science contradict each other and discuss how we can reconcile them while preserving the history confessed in the Bible.  We will close with singing the hymn “Eternal Father, Strong to Save” (LSB 717)

As always new people are always welcome to this study at any point during the class.  Please talk to the Pastor, Elders or Paul Edmon if you have any questions.
