Lutheran Essentials meets in the undercroft of the church on Wednesday evenings at 7pm. You can reach the undercroft by going around to the back parking lot of the church and descending the staircase to the kitchen. Knock on the door if it is closed and some one will let you in. Our current study is on “The Fire and the Staff” by Klemet Preus and the Historic Liturgy. If you do not have a copy of the “The Fire and the Staff” or the Book of Concord we are providing them for free.
The Psalm for this week is Psalm 42. The Small Catechism lesson is the Third Article of the Apostles Creed.
The first half of the class we will continue reading through “The Fire and the Staff”. We will be reading Chapter 2: The Heat of the Fire (pg. 55-78) discussing the doctrine of Justification. We will preview our future study on the Formula of Concord by discussing Osiandrianism and why we must insist that Justification is external to the Christian and purely an act of God.
For the second half of the class we will continue our study of the Divine Service Setting III in Lutheran Service Book with a discussion Confession (LSB 184). We will talk about Private versus Public Confession, why confession is important, and the scriptural basis for the words we say in Public Confession. We will conclude by singing “From Depths of Woe I Cry to Thee” (LSB 607).
We will also discuss Holy Absolution (LSB 185). We will discuss the Office of the Keys and the basis of the Absolution in Scripture. We will close with the hymn “By Grace I’m Saved” (LSB 566)
As always new people are always welcome to this study at any point during the class. Please talk to the Pastor, Elders or Paul Edmon if you have any questions.
