Lutheran Essentials meets in the undercroft of the church on Wednesday evenings at 7pm. You can reach the undercroft by going around to the back parking lot of the church and descending the staircase to the kitchen. Knock on the door if it is closed and some one will let you in. This week we are continuing our study on the Ecumenical Creeds. The worksheet we are using for the Apostles’ and Nicene Creed will be provided, as well as the worksheet for the Athanasian Creed. We are also providing hard copies of the Book of Concord for free, as well as copies of the Lutheran Service Book.
We will open class with Psalm 89 and our catechism lesson will be the Fifth Commandment. We will continue the Second Article by discussing why the Son of God came to earth. We will talk about His mission of love to save us from our sins. We will then sing “O Love, How Deep” (LSB 544).
We will then discuss the Annunciation of our Lord. We will talk about how the Blessed Virgin Mary is truly the Theotokos (“mother of God”). We will then sing “The Angel Gabriel From Heaven Came” (LSB 356).
We will talk about the Incarnation of our Lord. How the Second Person of the Trinity, the eternal Son of God, the Word became flesh. How Jesus Christ is truly and fully man. We will sing the hymn “All My Heart Again Rejoices” (LSB 360).
Next we will talk of Christ’s crucifixion under Pontius Pilate. We will talk about what is involved in crucifixions and the historical context of the death of Christ. We will sing the hymn “Jesus I Will Ponder Now” (LSB 440).
Finally we will talk about Christ’s Passion. The fact that the Son of God dies on the cross and what that profound statement means. We will also discuss Christ’s burial. We will close by singing “O Sacred Head, Now Wounded” (LSB 450).
As always new people are always welcome to this study at any point during the class. Please talk to the Pastor, Elders or Paul Edmon if you have any questions.
