Lutheran Essentials meets in the undercroft of the church on Wednesdays at 7pm. You can reach the undercroft by going around to the back parking lot of the church and descending the staircase to the kitchen. Knock on the door if it is closed and some one will let you in. You can also join us remotely via our livestream. We are beginning our study of “The Hammer of God”. We are handing out copies of this book as well the Book of Concord and the Lutheran Service Book for free.
We will open class with Psalm 144 and our catechism lesson which is on the Second Commandment. We will begin our study of “The Hammer of God” with reading the introductory material in the front of the book. We will discuss the background of the author, Bo Giertz, as well as the historical setting of the text which is 19th and early 20th century Sweden. We will also walk through an overview of the three major sections of the book which concern the movements of rationalism, pietism, revivalism, liberal theology, and secularism that have wracked the Lutheran church across the world. We will close with the hymn “The Royal Banners Forward Go” (LSB 455).
As always new people are always welcome to this study at any point during the class. Please talk to the Pastor, Elders or Paul Edmon if you have any questions.
