Unknown French Master, Christ teaching the Lord’s Prayer, Koninklijke Bibliotheek, The Hague, c.1200
Lutheran Essentials is currently meeting remotely due to the COVID pandemic. You can join us via our livestream, we will start at 7pm. We are studying Martin Luther’s Large Catechism. As part of the class we are handing out copies of the Book of Concord (which contains the Catechism) and the Lutheran Service Book for free.
We will open our study with Psalm 141, recite the Introduction to the Lord’s Prayer from the Small Catechism, and sing verse 1 of the hymn “Our Father Who From Heaven Above” (LSB 766). We will then look at the Introduction to the Lord’s Prayer in the Large Catechism. We will talk about what prayer is and why we are to pray. That our heavenly Father invites us as dear children to come to Him with our needs and wants. God the Father truly hears our prayers for the sake of Christ, through the mediation of the Holy Ghost and will give us all good. We will close this section with the hymn “Now Rest Beneath Night’s Shadow” (LSB 880).
We will then read Psalm 96, recite the First Petition of the Lord’s Prayer from the Small Catechism, and sing verse 2 of the hymn “Our Father Who From Heaven Above” (LSB 766). We will look at the First Petition of the Lord’s Prayer in the Large Catechism. We will talk about how the First Petition is really a fulfillment of the Second Commandment. We are to keep God’s name holy, and this petition begs God for His aid in doing so, against all heresy, hypocrisy, and evil. We will close with the hymn “Oh Lord Look Down From Heaven Behold” (TLH 260).
As always new people are always welcome to this study at any point during the class. Please talk to the Pastor, Elders or Paul Edmon if you have any questions.
