Lutheran Essentials meets in the undercroft of the church on Wednesday evenings at 7pm. You can reach the undercroft by going around to the back parking lot of the church and descending the staircase to the kitchen. Knock on the door if it is closed and some one will let you in. We are studying the The Smalcald Articles in the Book of Concord. If you do not have a copy of the Book of Concord we are providing them for free.
The Psalm for this week is Psalm 27. The Small Catechism lesson is the Confession.
We will read Part II: The Articles That Refer to the Office and Work of Jesus Christ: That Is, Our Redemption Article I: The Chief Article. In this we will discuss Justification, how we are made right before God, and how if this article is compromised the whole Church falls. We will close this article with the singing of “Salvation Unto Us Has Come” (LSB 555).
Then we will read Part II Article II: The Mass. With this article we will discuss what the Mass is and why the Mass as practiced under the papacy is the “greatest and most horrible abomination”. We will other abuses that are related to the abuses of the Mass such as Purgatory, Praying to the Saints, Pilgrimages, Monasticism, Relics, and Indulgences. All of these go against the Chief Article on how we are made right to God based only on the merit and work of Christ. We will close this article with the singing of “By Grace I’m Saved” (LSB 566).
As always new people are always welcome to this study at any point during the class. Please talk to the Pastor, Elders or Paul Edmon if you have any questions.
