President of Concordia New York Visits First Lutheran Church
On March 18th First Lutheran Church was privileged to hear President John Nunes preach the gospel, and to hear his wife, the talented Monique Nunes, sing a beautiful rendition of the classic hymn Great is Thy Faithfulness. Dr. Nunes also led the adult Bible study hour in a discussion of how ideas shape our perception of the world around us. Specifically, he discussed how the concept of Imago Dei (that human beings are created in the image of God) shapes the way we see and care for people around us.
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” Genesis 1:26
Talking about how Concordia New York (formerly Concordia Bronxville) strives to nurture and develop the character of each student, Dr. Nunes said that because we see an echo of God in each human being, every person we interact with has three things: Dignity, Capacity, and Accountability. The dignity of each human being is a small reflection of God’s infinite majesty. The capacity of a person (their ability to make a difference) is a tiny reflection of God’s omnipotence. And we are all held accountable for our actions before the throne of God who created all things, although we rest secure in the knowledge that our sins are covered by the sacrifice of Jesus our Savior.
We sincerely hope to welcome the Nunes back to First Lutheran Church in the future. First Lutheran supports Concordia’s mission with an annual contribution as a member of the East Coast Association of Congregations.
