We are pleased to welcome the MarienKantorei Lemgo to First Lutheran Church on Sunday, October 4th. They come to us from the old Hanseatic League city of Lemgo, in northwest Germany. This is their first cultural exchange tour to the USA, with Boston being their first stop. After singing from the balcony for the second service, they will give a concert later at 6 pm.

The choir program of St. Mary’s Lemgo (German name: MarienKantorei) was established in 1946, and since January 2011 has been directed by Volker Jänig, a former student of Arvid Gast who played here in March for the Bach Birthday. Mr. Jänig serves as director of music not only at St. Mary’s but for the surrounding district churches. Under his direction in the MarienKantorei are four sections, two for children up to age 15, a large choir for performances of oratorios and other grand works with orchestra, and a smaller choir of up to 30 singers for performances of unaccompanied music. Members of all of these choirs form the group that is visiting the USA.
