In 1916,
Rosa Young (book
excerpts) wrote
Booker T. Washington, seeking funding for her school for Black children. She later recounted Washington's advice "to write to the Board of Colored Missions of the Lutheran Church [Missouri Synod].
He said they were doing more for [Blacks] than any other denomination he knew of." Young later helped establish
Concordia College, Selma, Ala. Today, the
Board for Black Ministry Services continues the
LCMS commitment to the African American community.
